Default Safer Food Better Business - for childminders

A new pack is being released within the next 2 weeks especially for childminders.

You can order a copy by phoning - 08456 060667

    Or by email - foodstandards@ecgroup.co.uk

I can't find anything online about it yet but when I rang them they knew what I was talking about and took my details.

    Already ordered mine thanks

Not looking forward to another sort of inspection now it seems we have to register with FSA if we are providing and cooking food.

Thanks I will order a pack.

    Does that mean 2 inspections?

I'm regretting offering a hot meal already!

You are a food provider if you offer drinks... so don't worry about hot meals!

Some childminders already have food hygiene inspections ... some areas aren't doing them yet.

I had the environmental health come round before I started. The lady said if I didn't offer hot meals I would have only had to fill in a questionnaire. Now I'm just waiting to hear from them how often they will come and inspect me.

Is the FSA inspection different to that?

As I understand it, due to changes in the regulations, there is no longer the leeway to class childminders as "low risk" so it will mean an initial inspection when you register and then (provided they've no concerns) follow up inspections every 2/3 years - bit like Ofsted!

We were told we were more at risk if we provided sandwich type food than hot food, because food such as ham that was not cooked in our home before serving was more of a risk than say cooking a pork chop freshly.

That said of all the childminders i know that have registered not one has been inspected.
