Here we have a little information about passover and an activity to make a Seder plate. Passover is one of the most important and elaborate of religious festivals in Judaism. The celebrations begin on the evening of the fourteenth day of Nisan and last for seven days. Passover celebrates the Jews deliverance from Egypt which was led by Moses. In the ceremonial evening meal, call the Seder, various special dishes are served. Six are on the Seder plate. 1. A Roasted Egg 2. Roasted Lamb shankbone 3. Parsley or other green herb 4. Bitter herbs 5. Charoseth (apples, cinnamon, nuts and wine mixed together) 6. Bitter vegetables Matzah bread (unleavened bread) Four cups of wine Salt water These symbolise the hardships of the Israelites when they were slaves in Egypt. Seder plates that hold the special food are beautifully decorated and only used for this meal. During Seder an extra place is set at the table with a special glass of wine for the prophet Elijah. He is said to visit each Seder and at a certain point in the meal the door is opened and a hymn is sung to welcome him in.
Make a Seder Plate Take a sturdy paper plate. Cut out food pictures from magazines to represent the food that would go on the Seder plate 1 - 6 above and glue then onto the plate. Decorate the plate any way that you want. Discuss the Seder Plate and why it is used. |
