What do you want to

Activities for EYFS Areas of Learning

Following the Leader

The leader can change the activity any time he or she wants, it might be hand clapping, waving, jigging, hopping etc.

Everyone in the group has to watch the leader to see what to do next.

For younger children, this might be as much as you want to try but for older children it can be made more interesting to use the following ideas:

Without saying anything, the leader can let someone else in the circle know that they are now the leader. It could be a wink, a nod, or even just a smile with direct eye contact.

Then the new leader can change the action any time until passing the leader role to a new person.

The children have to be paying attention to figure out who is the new leader and what action they should be doing now.

The children have fun with the game. More importantly, they are interacting socially, learning to pay attention to each other and using non-verbal communication skills.
