Activities for EYFS Areas of Learning

Games to play with a parachute:

Cat and Mouse:

With everyone holding the parachute pick a volunteer to be the cat. They take off their shoes and get on top of the parachute in the middle.

Now pick two mice. They go on all fours and crawl UNDER the parachute.

When you shout "go", everyone else has to shake the parachute frantically to do their best to hide the mice. At the same time the cat tries his best to move around to track down it's prey.

Swap the mice over when caught. Change the cat as and when it seems necessary.

Mr/Mrs. Frog says:

Spread the parachute out on the floor. Pretend it is a lily pad.

One person sits in the middle - this is the frog.

The others around the outside clap to make a rhythm and sing "Hey frog let's have a bit of your space" the frog says "only if you are wearing red you can take one hop forward" or "if you had cornflakes for breakfast you can take one hop backwards" etc. The aim is to get everyone onto the parachute.

There There Pussycat:

Spread the parachute out on the floor and have the children seated around it. The leader gets on the parachute (with no shoes) on all 4's and pretends to be a cat.

They then choose a person who they think may well laugh and slowly proceed to miaow and purr at them.

The chosen person then has to pat the cat on the head and say "There, there pussycat" 3 times very calmly.

If the person laughs or cannot complete this task they then become the new cat
